Problem statement

Newly diagnosed patients with diabetes type 2 find it challenging to manage their long-term conditions. In this project, I will be focusing on finding an answer to these two questions.

How might we understand diabetes type II patient challenges?

How might we create a digital solution to help them in this journey?

Empathy phase

Secondary research

The goal of this study is to help newly diagnosed diabetes patient (target user) with all their responsibilities that relate to a correct management of their condition, we need to first learn what exactly are these responsibilities & what are the medical recommendation for each one.

Those responsibilities are mentioned in the medical literature so I did a secondary research to learn each duty that our user have to do to manage their condition, I studied a course about type 2 diabetes taken from my college endocrinology residency program.

I summarise the medical recommendation for a correct management of type 2 diabetes, this document will be the source of truth when making su

To summarise:

Type 2 diabetes patient journey

To put the medical recommendation in context we need to empathize with the T2D patient journey, I sat with an endocrinology doctor and a T2D patient and asked them about the individuals with diabetes journey from the patient and the doctor both perspective to create a correct user Journey.

The interview question were about understanding every step the T2D patient go threw with details and what are the medical recommendation in each step.

In summary the user have a cycle of 8 steps threw their journey, 5 on these steps are the user responsibility (education, correct diet, correct physical activity, monitor glucose levels, taking medications), these 5 steps will be our focus to learn what is stoping the user from doing them correctly and how might we help them threw these steps.

Available solution analysis (competition analysis)

Later we will search the pain points of these medical recommendation and create solutions for these pain points, but first we need to understand what are the available solutions and what the competition is doing, we need to know what are the available solution the user have and not doing research to reinvent the wheel.

First, we identify the available solutions that are currently helping the user threw each step of their condition management: education, diet, physical activity, glucose monitoring and medication intake.

Second, I added the pros and cons of each solution the user is doing in each step of their management process.

Finally, I summarized the results into practical recommendation for our product.

Interview & surveys execution

Now that we know the journey of the T2D patients, the available solutions, the solutions pain and strength point., we need to do research to understand what is stopping these patient from a correct management of their condition which means pain points.

The surveys and interview both ask about the user pain point regarding: diabetes management education, diet, physical activity, glucose monitoring and medication intake, as well as demographic questions to help us understand and create our personas down the line.

Interview

I conducted interviews in the endocrinology department of my university hospital center.

I started approaching patients in the waiting room, ten out of a total of eleven patients asked agreed to have the interview, I prepared and printed the interview script and process and bought some gifted cards to use as an incentive for people participation.

Survey

The main goal of the survey was to understand the user pain point when trying to manage their condition and to collect demographic data to be able to create accurate personas.

To increase the response rate of the survey I performed these strategies:

I distributed the survey via Facebook and subreddit's of diabetes related groups, 24 peaple participated.

Pain points per demographic metrics

The main reason I added demographic questions in the interview and survey was to see if there are demographic tendencies for each answer, meaning if the same people profiles are having similar answer that will help us to know who we are trying to solve for and give us a real world data about our persona.

Diet management pain points

Physical activity pain points

Medication consumption, glucose monitoring & education pain points

I noticed that the pain points in the phase of Medication consumption, glucose monitoring & education had equal distribution of the demographic variables per each answer, so all personas have similar pain points for these phases.

Ideation

Persona

Persona creation process

This  is the copy explaining the persona creation process and how we used the demographic mertics tendencies to determined the persona.

The persona itself

Initial solution

In order to start the initial brainstorming, we need to put all the informations we learned in one place which we will call the users journey, these informations :are patient life style process, competition analysis results, research results (pain points).

Brainstoming canvas (product requirements)

In the journey maps we can only brainstorm the solution in big picture, not all details about the solution could be included in the user journey, this is the role of the brainstorming canvas that has the product requirements

Logic and backend explanation

Before going to the design, I took a moment to envision how the logic and the backend of our app will work, both the brainstorming canvas and the backend and logic explanation are the source of truth for our design process.

Design

Design system

For the MVP and idea evaluation it was not practical to create a design system from scratch. we will be using google Material design system.

Customise the component library (UI kit file)

Threw out the design I needed some icons and design element like the chart element, I extended the component library as needed by adding component and making sure those component comply to material design language.

The Design itself (design file)

In this case study I will show screen shots form each section, if you want to view the design in details with flow & backend explanation please view the Figma file below(PSW:2222).
